Since I am from Palm Springs there weren't a lot of trees around but even for the few that there were I had not known you could see the leaves on the trees individually from the ground. It was a fabulous revelation!

This is MonkeyBoy, Nancy our hostess and our friend Sanchez on the way to David Copperfield. Berndt, Nancy's boyfriend and our other host was ill and did not get to come, we missed him.

We had a great time seeing something that might not have occurred to us. Copperfield was mostly charming, and accomplished. I of course found the mixed media aspects of the show interesting. But 2 best parts of the day. Seeing Nancy's house and having drinks on her patio in the forest, one of my favorite things in the world as y'all know. Then I spoke to my jewelry teacher, did a little consult on the phone and I think he solved a problem for me....

Elizabeth Warren is the Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel on Toxic Asset Relief Program (TARP.) She is smart and articulate.

In the earlier clip (part one) she said it was her job to to ensure Transparency, Accountablility and Clarity.

In this clip from the Daily Show she said that after the depression 3 protections were implemented.

FDIC - to ensure it was safe to put your money in the banks

Glass Steagall Act so banks won't do crazy things, i. e. it also put in place regulations allowing the Federal reserve to regulate interest savings rates

SEC Regulations

Those protected us somewhat for 50 years, and then the government began to pull the thread from the regulatory fabric and here we are in a financial crisis. First consequence was the S&L Crisis, 700 institutions failed. Then long term capital management issues and then Enron which told us the books were dirty. And we continued to pull the thread out of the regulatory fabric.

She summarizes by saying we need smart regulation that adapts to the fact that we have new products and what we will have going forward is stability and properity for the ordinary folk.

So wow, I am grateful that plain girls get to be smart and articulate. She may make the difference in our economy in the next year or two.

There has been a lot of buzz lately about Susan Boyle, a plain woman with grace and talent who had the courage to be radically self expressed.

I am and was pleased by her celebrity and bravery, although somewhat dismayed that there are people who do not think plain people have talents that they often don't show because the world is not really interested in plain people.

Jennybird Alcantara's Treacherous Gardens solo exhibit of paintings explores "the garden of the mind" and its vast, beautiful landscape filled with inherent pitfalls. Duality, water themes, dreams and nightmares figure prominently in this series of detailed fantasies in oil and acrylic on panel.

"I have always been a daydreamer," says Jennybird, "and get many of my ideas during that state of semi-consciousness. Burn the Fllor

My friend and I went to see Burn the Floor this weekend at the Post Theatre. It was a little uneven for me because I like some styles of dance more than others. But there were amazing moments, like when the dancer floated as someone twirled her, and the great rendition of Rolling on the River...16 dancers, 2 percussionists and 2 singers, all amazing.

We got out to see the Serpent Mother on Treasure Island last night and we were surprised to see so many of our dear friends there that we did not know were coming, beginning with Homouroboros (But the Monkeys were not spinning), it was great to see them. Then our good friends all, Mark and Janet, Annetta and Greg and Sierra with her new fiance and their friend Ryan, and then Steve and Tate (Tate is gorgeous and getting taller) suprised us, and Nelda stopped to say hello on our way out.

It is always a special treat to see everyone when you are not expecting them and get big hugs.

Serpent Mother was gorgeous lit up, although we missed the fire.

This First Friday spectacular art, music, and film event celebrates the works of
regional artists and pays tribute to Andy Warhol and his Factory, the original New York City studio from 1962 to 1968. The Factory Party takes place in a massive warehouse space divided into nine distinct rooms where guests are immersed in a wide range of art mediums, as well as live art, musical performances and theatrical art forms. A portion of this event features a re-creation of Andy Warhol’s Factory, and is brought you by the East Bay Express. Visitors entering the Factory will see live production of art in the style and process performed by Andy Warhol, including silk screening, filming, screen testing, and painting. Velvet Underground cover bands will perform, recreating sounds at the Factory. Guests are encouraged to dress in their 1960’s best and are welcome to lounge in the Factory with “Warhol” and his “Super Stars”.

MonkeyBoy is not working right now so we seem to be getting out more. We went to see Andy Warhol Live and the Yves St. Laurent exhibits at the De Young, and they were fabulous. I wish I had photos to show you but no photos allowed.

Warhol Live was great. My favorite parts were the quotes on the walls and the "room". The room was a montage of slides changing and moving, there was a pile of cushions where you could lie down and look up. my fav...

So MonkeyBoy and I participated in the "How Berkeley Can You Be Parade" a week ago Sunday as part of the bunny contingent....We were enticed by the young Bissingers participating (Eggchair's girls and Annie the neighbor). So MonkeyBoy and I have never felt like the best bunnies ever but in this particular parade I found myself leaping from shade to shade, sometimes hanging out with the Mayor's contingent rather than the bunnies (a shade slut, I am sure you are not surprised).Don't you love the color of this building? So I just looked up at the TV and there was the Parade on HDNET tv, the cupcakes, the band....and "the fat lady on a scooter", not even identified as a bunny. I guess I am amused, because I am in fact a fat woman on a scooter!!

Burning Man Tribe Party Big week!!! Last week Cowboy Angel organized and Chicken John hosted a Burning Man Tribe appreciation party. Some of the Tribe folks showed up including our personal favorite, the delightful and smart Jenni. It was one of my favorite parties ever. GREAT VENUE, Chicken John's home is the perfect space for a party, interesting and filled with interesting people. Not so loud you could not talk. And AG, Tom Price (with a great pie) Aristotle (who just played and played with the baby, Alabama) Me Jane (our delightful neighbor in real life) (this is real life, you say), Charlie and Bell, or course the ever effervescent Party Radar always filled with great ideas for the next Sparkle. Met Leslie, Cowboy Angel and some other nice folks..... We are having a lot of fun here!! Tonight is the CD photo exchange party! WE ARE BACK FROM SABBATICAL!!! I CAN TELL BECAUSE WE ARE HAVING FUN.

PreCompression

Forgive me for posting out of order! The evening before Decompression MonkeyBoy and I went to dinner at Chez Nous and the food was great. Then we went to see Black Dahlia. Liked it a lot. I little confusing but lovely to look at, gorgeous noir, clothes, etc. edgy characters. The we went to Blondie's party (see above, Cafe Blondie) and had great fun. Laughed until after midnight which is VERY late for Affinity and MonkeyBoy. Brooke was there and it is always a delight to see her. and Mark from the cafe in town for Decompression. Brian and his pre-playa girlfriend were on their way to Decompression in the morning. She was in for quite a treat.... Blondie's food was generous and lovely and it is always a treat to see where someone lives so you can visualize them there later. You might notice in the photo that Blondie is wearing a shirt with t-shirt transfers. He was an early adopter and has almost all of my transfers and screens from through the years which of course makes my little heart glow!! Then he came out to the Ranch and helped with a work weekend and kicked ass!!! So now he is part of the Cafe and we are thrilled to have both he and Mark who has also been a huge asset and all round nice guy. Kudos Blondie, a very good time was had by all.

Decompression 2006

Eggchair arrived early and created a shade oaisis for all of us. It was great fun not having a job or t-shirts to do. I had a tiny anxiety attack for a short time about 6pm but I got over with the gentle kindness of my MonkeyBoy and my friends. We saw lots of folks, most especially the Moze, great to hug him and send him love, we had a special time hanging with Eggchair and his friends on his turf. We are really enjoying getting to know the ever generous and creative Eggchair. Sowelu and Benny beamed, Jewel stopped by, many folks stopped by to get off their feet for a few minutes. I was also fun to see Hot Damn and Hot Dog looking so good and so happy and as always Karmabunny and Starboy. And our neighbor Jane who is always fun. Alibaba and Francis slid by very late in lime green, very cute dress, loved it and Electra was in lime green also. We need a photo girls.... And that is just a smattering of those we saw, love to all of you. Oh and a very special gift happened! I ran into some people and they gave me a canvas BRC embroidered, appliqued bag as a thank you for all those years of t-shirt art....I was touched and I hope one of them reads this becasue it was a very special moment for me since it has actually been a couple of years since I have done t-shirts for the public. Most fun I have EVER had at Decompression!!

Diva gathered some of her crew last night to go see Shortbus and MonkeyBoy and I joined in. Thanks Diva for getting us out of the house. We loved it!!! Funny, sexy, sensual, explicit, the sex and turn on looked and felt real. The cast felt like they were "our peeps" only younger. There was even a fat person in some of the sex scenes. Yipee!

Great Work Day!!!

In the spirit of loving "what is"!! So I worked at my new job at Fidelity yesterday and it was the first time in the 3 weeks that I had been there that my computer worked and I could print (not a story worth telling). I had a great time. I love being a contractor. I had been in the office on Wednesday finalizing getting my computer up and running and my boss said "oh by the way I am having a conference call in a few minutes, can you sit in?" So I did and this 3.5 hours of work popped up out of the conference call. I had forgotten that sometimes you need to be there whether you have work or not....it generates work. It was great working for my old boss, very comfortable in my body, nothing like a well worn neuronal pathway to give you comfort. Then last night at my other job (I have been there off and on since 1990)....At a party for our house band, that's right, Watson Wyatt, office of about 150 people has a band comprised of employees, including the office manager, pretty cool for an employee benefits consulting firm!!! So one of the people that I always think does not like me said that he had put me in a proposal and he would let me know if we got the work. So I am loving working fewer hours than I had in the last 18 months and there is more work in my future, that is a good thing. Any of y'all going to the Burning Man Tribe Party at Chicken John's? We intend to go.

Okay were back. Is it enough to tell the truth? No I aspire to showing up. A friend suggested recently while we were at the Fire Ballet that it might have some elements of Rock Horror. My response, on no, the Crucible is much to serious, too dark to dabble is pop culture. FAIL

The whole ballet was a combination of Rocky Horror, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Thriller. And I loved it. But where did my batting away of her deduction come from. My defensiveness. I continue to want to be right, know more and be the "in kid".

So my authenticity shows up when I am leading from my heart and not my defenseness. My joyful spirit is most apparent when I am not afraid or showoffy....

Somehow I suspect this conversation will keep returning to fear. Fear of being fired, fear of not being loved, fear of being my crazy mother or father, fear of just being the old fat lady.

Dracul: Prince of Fire

What a spectacle of Fire, and performance. With nods to Thriller, Rocky Horror and some I am sure I missed, it was clever, gorgeous and fun. My favorite scene was a scene with fire everywhere, lining the stairwell, BIG lanterns on each side of the stage, fire spinning, fire eating, forging, plasma cutting, glass blowing and dancing all at the same time. Spectacle I say. There were moments I was afraid for the performers others where I could not believe how huge the show was, i.e., when Dracul came to the stage from overhead on a "crane" that moves across the entire ceiling, or when the Fire breathing Dragon arrived on stage.

My favorite move was a part of the ballet, in which "Dammit-Janet" jumps into the protaginists arms with her knees curled under her. I assume this is not an unusual move but it just felt like "grace", a still quiet moment in theatre of noise and magnitude.

Dracul was an aerialist and used the scarves so beautifully.

We had seen one of the Crucible's outside operas a couple of years ago and this was so much more personal, I loved it. We live in an amazing place.

We went to the Gala because our friend Lisa was turning 40 and our friend Jewel is turning 60 and we thought it would be a fun way to celebrate.

This was my first day off in a long time where I just hung out and watched a video of my choosing and talked to my old friend Porter for over an hour, and picked up the house and made meatloaf and just loved being at home alone.

Porter and I talk about things I just don't talk to anyone else about, we wax a little nostalgic, we talk about the impact of music, hip hop, rap, the ever whiny Neil Young, his "mitigation" training, my recent adventures, his living in South Carolina. Just the things old friends talk about, and he makes me laugh.

Another good thing happened today, Meghan from the Burning Man office called and asked me to help with the Regional Summit at the end of February.

So make a note, Flambe Lounge is going to be on Saturday February 28....

Now time for meatloaf.

I am finding life pretty difficult right now! Our bathroom is torn apart and another weird period at work. I swore years ago I would never be afraid for my job again, that I would be financially secure enough that I would always have the option of quitting. But my health insurance is $680 a month and there is my share of the mortgage, moderate, but still, and of course like everyone I don't have the same savings account balance I used to have.

So how do I keep my promise to myself? Be the best I can be, work hard, give them value for their $$, but not succumb to fear, oh yeah, that grateful thing.

I have a job!
I have a beloved!
I can have a real conversation with almost all my friends and talk about real things!
I have better health than I could have thought at this age and size!
I have an amazing rich life filled with more adventure than I have the time to write about. Just in December...

A few weeks ago we went to the Rex Foundation Gala, what I would call the non-profit arm of the Grateful Dead.

There we met JB who invited us to his open house at the Grateful Graphics Warehouse.

I took some time off work and off we went. When we got there a few Deadheads were gathering and JB told us to make ourselves at home, and feel free to help ourselves to the "seconds" in the stacks around the room. MonkeyBoy got to pick out the fabulous hoodie below. And I got a few Dancing Bear Peace Symbol Buttons to share with my friends, could anything make me happier than that?Johnathan spoke about the beginnings of Grateful Graphics.

As the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love has passed, I am reminded of the day 23 years ago when I first premiered the Dancing Bears and Grateful Graphics. In the overflowing parking lot outside the Hampton Coliseum, I sold my first hand-painted Row of Dancing Bears shirt changing the world of Grateful Dead merchandising and beginning a cultural revolution within our community that allowed Deadheads to show their love and devotion for the band in a gentler, more loving way. I believe the introduction of the Dancing Bear to mainstream GD iconography was much like the Summer of Love. In the words of Fraser Clark, editor of the Encyclopedia Psychedelica, the summer of 1967 was a "new fractal of social change which was to massively influence events for years to come." The Dancing Bears did just that as they evoked the lighter, happier side of the scene. With the Dancing Bears came the acceptance of "showing one's colors" outside of the concert experience by folks from all walks of life. And now, the journey continues with our latest catalogue of Grateful Graphics goodies. I invite you to grab some daisies, go barefoot, tune in and turn on. Here's to the joy the Grateful Dead has brought to all of us, each and every day...

Of course Johnathan is now a Burner so we felt right at home.

Then JB took the floor and talked about how the business of Grateful Graphics worked now, and my favorite part, that the inspiration for the Dancing Bear Peace Symbol, was the Peace Symbol's 50th anniversary, April 4, 2008. April 4 is JB birthday, his Dad's birthday and guess what, the MonkeyBoy's birthday. So Peace and love all in one package.

Then for the 2nd part of our big adventure, we went to the silkscreening factory where the Grateful Graphics products are printed. Ya gotta know that I LOVED seeing the big silkscreening machines and folder and digital silkscreening and when I thought about my little Gocco Silkscreening DIY machine I had to laugh. Then off to lunch at the Conneticut Yankee.

I had such a good time. I loved hearing about how the business got started, getting to know JB and seeing the warehouse, and the peace buttons, and the silkscreening factory, and lunch with a bunch of deadheads. What could be more fun than that?

What a fabulous adventure. Thanks JB and thanks Freddy for introducing us to the cool people at your table at the Rex Foundation Gala!

Relentness Authenticity

I aspire to relentless authenticity. I read that phrase in a New Yorker article about Marc Jacobs today, I don't much aspire to be him or want what he wants but I do aspire to relentless authenticity. I want show up, not to be seen but to be who I am. I want to stay centered and love who I am. I want to be authentic in all that I do.

I am going to revisit this topic often because I do not believe I am expressing myself very well but I do think I want to clarify this for me.

A few weeks ago I celebrated my 60th birthday with old friends at Stage Werx. More about that later.

About a month ago I heard from my friend Peggy wanting to know more about Stage Werx, could it be rented? What did it cost? Did I know anyone who could produce a one act play for one night in San Francisco?

Several years ago Peggy's 38 year old daughter died of ovarian cancer, very suddenly. Beth was vibrant and smart and interesting. So Peggy sent this email recently:

As many of you know, in July I had the privilege of going to New York City to see Alice Barden perform: Alice and Elizabeth: A One Woman Show. Elizabeth, my daughter, to the moment she became ill, and Alice were best friends and went to New York City together to follow their dreams. Together they wrote this play and Alice has brought it onto the stage in New York in two Theatres and for a one time showing December 22nd, Monday. It is a real gift to me of course to have the experience of Elizabeth and her life as she expressed it in this play they wrote. It offers a great deal to anyone who sees it was my experience. It's about the power of the friendship of women who share their vision and themselves, it's about joy.

Thanks Peggy for sharing this amazing window to who Beth was and her friendship with Alice and how it touched their lives, it was courageous to invite all of us to share a moment with your beloved Beth, in your presence. I thought the play was interesting, insightful, well acted and directed and a tribute to both Alice and Beth!

Why the origami crane?
This project draws inspiration from a little girl who lived and died nearly half a century ago. Sadako Sasaki was two when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Several years later, suffering from leukemia, Sadako learned of a legend that would grant one wish to the folders of 1,000 cranes. Her wish was for peace. She started folding but died 356 cranes short of her goal. Her classmates folded the rest in her honor and all 1,000 were buried with her. From that moment, when the world learned of her courageous story, the crane became a symbol of world peace.

And that made me reminisce a little...When I moved to San Francisco I had never taken really taken buses much, being from Palm Springs. The bus driver here in San Francisco on the 41 was a long hair freak and he made origami cranes and hung them in the window of the bus. You were welcome to take one if you wished to and he would tell you the story of the 1,000 cranes. I knew then I was in the right town, on my way to my straight job in the financial district, with the hippie bus driver on the way. He was the driver for several years and made a difference in the start of many days.

Emile Norman - by his own Design DVD Must See

I loved this documentary. Emile Norman created the "glass" mural at the Masonic Temple in San Francisco, he does wood inlay, he continues to live life on his own terms and he had a great love. There is some art technique, but if you are interested in that you should watch the "special feature" The Hawk" film included on the DVD.

His life is a delight.

We have had the most incredible fall ever. Fall is my favorite time of year and good thing often happen, but this fall has been amazing. We had SOOOO much fun at Andie and Tom's wedding, there was Frank and his string trio, the amazing Reverend Billy, The kiss, the vows, Juniper dressed like her Momma, clowns, a venue in the woods, a tent to party, and a party full of the most amazing people ever.

Andie and Tom walked their talk, the wedding was as DIY as possible, friends helped put up the tent, Amber made Andie and Juniper gorgeous clothes, friends did the catering, the set up a photo booth. It was the most spectacular "at home" wedding I have been to.

So thanks for the fun and loving each other and letting us be part of your community.

I loved the book "Sleeping Where I Fall" by Peter Coyote. The most interesting, beautifully written memoir I have ever read. Peter Coyote used to be a poet, and it shows....and it is about hippies, what could be better than that.

To celebrate the campaign, Creative Commons has released “A Shared Culture,” a short video by renowned filmmaker Jesse Dylan. Known for helming a variety of films, music videos, and the Emmy Award-winning “Yes We Can” Barack Obama campaign video collaboration with rapper will.i.am, Dylan created “A Shared Culture” to help spread the word about the Creative Commons mission.

In the video, some of the leading thinkers behind Creative Commons describe how the organization is helping “save the world from failed sharing” through free tools that enable creators to easily make their work available to the public for legal sharing and remix. Dylan puts the Creative Commons system into action by punctuating the interview footage with dozens of photos that have been offered to the public for use under CC licenses. Similarly, he used two CC-licensed instrumental pieces by Nine Inch Nails as the video’s soundtrack music. These tracks, “17 Ghosts II” and “21 Ghosts III,” come from the Nine Inch Nails album Ghosts I-IV, which was released earlier this year under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license. Well, my Burning Man was uneventful this year....I mainly visited with friends, worked a couple of shifts at the volunteer booth, loved my sweetie to the best of my ability.

One of the highlights was getting to see Armadillo and Edge in the Catholic Schoolgirls/vampires....play at Center Camp, although I was having a meltdown.

Camping with Cafe Village was very sweet, they were very kind to us. I saw Moze just a couple of hours before he went to Reno and had his heart attack. I am very grateful he is okay. Eggchair and Jewel and Benny and MonkeyBoy and Sowelu went up in airplanes, very cool..... I may not go to Burning Man next year. MonkeyBoy can manage on his own and it is really too much work for just Community..... Maybe I will feel differently in a few months, going to wait until after the holidays to see how I feel. Sorry this is so boring.....

Thanks for coming out to see me in the musical, even tho' you having a meltdown. It was great hearing your voice in the Lounge and hanging out with you that morning (afternoon?). I, too, at this point, will not be back next year. Time to move on, in all aspects of my life. But who knows....it's always possible that next year, both of us will be hanging out together in the Lounge, chatting with Stardust.... (love the photo!)

One of my favorite memories from PI this year is talking with you and Rooster, and him having you repeat your question so that he could spit his coffee out in response! So every year I have suggested that we meet in Reno for a little R&R and connection. So we stayed at the Peppermill, had an amazing anniversary dinner, 13 years together on August 22 and 5 years married on August 29.... and then snuggled and slept, snuggled and slept. MonkeyBoy slept in until 8am. It sounds like the Cafe is coming along really well and will be ready for all of us when we get there.

My TV Won't work and I am an addict! (Posted in 2006)

So my TV would not go on when I came home last night. That has happened before and MonkeyBoy gets out the manual and I press something on the remote while he holds down the power key on the TV. MonkeyBoy is on the Playa, I will see him in Reno on Friday but I doubt he will be able to solve this long distance so I should buck up and solve the problem.
I love my TV and I watch a lot of it which is good for my aching neck. TV is a 64 inch tube (stupid choice) less than a year up because we blew all of our electrical appliances in the fall of '05, between the prostate surgery and the hernia surgery. So I try a couple of things last night, I push this, I push that, no luck. Sony is closed for the night. I go on line and find a users manual that is similar to mine, try what they suggest, no luck. Okay, catch up on email and go to bed. Wake up this morning, call Sony, they need the model number which is on the back of this fucking 80 pound tv that is on a shelf at shoulder height....have I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in... Can't help without a model number..I say "can't you just tell me the standard trick for geting these reset....No, we need the model number, you just don't understand, and the supervisor will not talk to me without a model number. So I hang up and take a 2nd look for the manual, Get out every manual, for the refrigerator we don't have any more, etc. And then I move the dressers over the rug and get to the plug, and unplug and plug it back in.
YIPEE!! YIPEE!! YIPEE!! It is making TV noises and there it is, the picture. I AM SO HAPPY.

Where is this camp I hear of with the fabulous view? Me and Mr. 23 will be at 4:00 and Esplanade with Illumination Village. :-) Who knows, tho... maybe we'll run into you and Monkey Boy in Reno on Friday... We'll be stopping by a gun shop, TJ's, and visiting steve's great uncle felix, among other things. See you out there!

Starting with Fire Arts, I was still tired, but I got to see Steve23 and Juicy (still thinking about you every day), a little short visit with Alibaba at PlayaInfo, an hello to Francis behind the bar, hey to our friend Carl and his Cousin with the cat, lots of time with the Other Robin who I am loving getting to know, some time with LadyBee, Curtis and his girlfriend, Rob and Sunset with a hello to Terry and Harley, Jewel was there, so a very social event, GREAT fire art.

Then, a very quiet weekend, meeting with the potential buyers and I can't remember anything else but quiet and rain. Then this week MUCH better at work, My boss being very positive about my staying, Saw Art School Confidential, another meeting with the potential buyers and the other co-tenants, went well, one of my friends fussed at me about being up tight and I said, YOU ARE RIGHT!!! Time to stop worrying and just let it be...bar-B-QUE Sat. Party Sunday at Marie's had a great time, lost my cell phone,,,,no worries... some fabulous MonkeyBoy and Affinity time on Sunday morning...and a little bar-B-Q in our back yard on yesterday, such a beautiful day, with our fav neighbor and Burner Jane. Life is good.....Both MonkeyBoy and I are feeling much better, almost no coughing...and ...a short week. ahead!!!! How sweet is that!!

As most of you know MonkeyBoy had prostate cancer in 2006 and had surgery to remove the prostate. This spring we went through 2 different rounds of unclear information from his Doctors office about his most recent follow up test, the PSA. MonkeyBoy went to the Doc last week for his 3 year check up and the result was perfect. Almost a flat reading, perfectly normal.

We had always assumed that the surgery had taken care of the cancer so when this unclear test result showed up in the spring, it was unsettling. We are thrilled to be back on the track of our belief that the cancer is gone and all is well.

I have been watching the West Wing reruns from 6-7 every morning and I had forgotten how beautifully written it is, and how fast it is, and how relevant it is, and how Martin Sheen can be my President any day, geeky peacemaker that he is, that our bosses should be so competent as well as the President of the United States, and that Stockard Channing was her own woman, and that the President and his wife lied to the world about his illness in order to win an election.
