Decisions

Sun, February 12, 2006 - 7:39 AM
A lot going on here. Still working on designing the Peace Pilgrim, deciding on a real estate agent to sell our apartment, are we doing the right thing. 3 weeks ago my boss gave notice, Thursday my boss's boss told us he is going to Italy for a year, etc. What will that mean for me, is there something I should do differently.

Lots up with the Training job at BM. A meeting at the office on Monday and then a training on Thursday night that is going to be a webcast.

Oh! Did I mention my ex-husband, who I consider family, is coming to stay over on his way somewhere on Monday night. We have not slept in the same house since 1975.

We are giving a little going away party for our neighbors and tenants on Friday evening...going to dinner at some of our oldest friends on Sat night, and then having company for brunch next Sunday morning. So yesterday we went outside and I had some muscat and listened to the quiet... If there is just a moment where I cannot hear anything it helps to calm my mind, and then the kids next door showed us their super sized bubble wand, wow, that was fabulous. So life is good, it is my goal to make this move and sale look easy, even to me....

The photo is the model for the Peace Pilgrim's nose as I believe all people will be people of color in 2081....

Yeah... many of us have drooled over this stuff for a while now. Unfortunately, it's prohibitivly expensive. Apparently the fabric is made of fiberoptics that have been woven and then "sanded" to allow light to escape from multiple areas along the line. With a bit of experimentation, we could probably build a rough version of this stuff. Then again, the parts and the effort might just justify the high (but still prohibitive) cost. Just my 2 cents.

I love my yellow kitchen. Joy! Maybe I can come see the place before you move. ;D

Biological Jewelry

February 6, 2006
There is a huge academic community out there creating interactive clothing. The Future, hope.... they are making biological jewelry...

extends biological identity by combining technology and design into a new decorative body surface. Cultured in a lab, this biological jewelry is made of epithelia cells which are designed to grow into lace patterns. epiSkin is an exploration into the decorative technological control over biology to create an artifact which is a hybrid of both. The cells used to create the jewelery were cultured in a lab in collaboration with a biologist, then grown into custom designed forms controlled by the artist.

The process in creating these pieces includes human tissue culturing as well as computer generated forms onto which the cells are transplanted into adaptive jewelry. The jewelry is worn on the body, completing the relationship of biological design as artifact. " But it is too delicate for the desert, so says the artist...

Fabric that emits sounds

Check it out. this is fabric with Audio tapes woven into it so you can play it with an old walkman. How cool is that. This messenger bag is made of it...
July 3, 2008
The fabric is a textile woven from recycled audio cassette tapes. So you create a hand held "player" with the guts of a walkman..then rub the magnetic head over the messenger bag in this instance, and the bag emits percussive sounds. In a later post we will be going on a field trip to check it out.

Fabric to encourage you to touch each other

Mon, February 6, 2006 -
There is amazing stuff out there..... The Closer projects' goals are to create wearable interactive art which reinforces values of kindness, fun and play through the action of positive touch. Closers goals are manifested in two technological garments, which inspire playful real-time real-space contact to accentuate the nature of positive touch experiences.
Patsy, the touch to sound pullover, responds with silly sounds upon gently hugging or holding the individual wearing the garment, while Filly, the touch to light jumper, uses a visual indicator to represent the number of positive touches or lack there of in an hour. These garments mediate touches in order to show technology’s capacity to spread positive touch interactions between people.
